Mahidol Wittayanusorn School Triumphs at ‘Green Mission by Chula x GULF Year 2’ with Climate Change Adaptation Innovation Winning innovation: An Epidemic Forecasting Map to Combat Global Warming

The curtain closed on a highly successful ‘Green Mission by Chula x GULF Year 2’ competition. The event, held under the challenging theme “Climate Change Adaptation” was co-hosted by Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, and Chulalongkorn University Radio Station. This year’s prestigious champion is the team from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, who impressed the judges with their innovative concept: “Climate, Health Adaptation & Monitoring Platform” (CHAMP). This epidemic data and forecasting map leverages analysis of patient data, weather conditions, and satellite imagery to enable the timely containment of disease outbreaks, such as dengue fever. The team was awarded the winning trophy and a scholarship prize of 40,000 Baht.
From over 798 applicants nationwide, 20 teams were selected to fully develop their potential through a diverse range of activities. The journey began with a field trip to GULF’s Uthai Power Plant and Thaicom Teleport and DTH Center in Pathum Thani Province, providing deep insights into energy and satellite technology. A key highlight was the intensive 3-day, 2-night Carbon Neutral Event Bootcamp at Chulalongkorn University’s Center of Learning Network for the Region in Saraburi Province, serving as a model for carbon footprint reduction. The camp was packed with concentrated knowledge and guidance from experts from the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, the Carbon Institute for Sustainability (CBiS), and student mentors from the Club Below 1.5°C under the Faculty of Engineering, as well as the GULF volunteer team or ‘GULF Asa’. Students honed crucial skills for climate change adaptation through practical workshops, including climate risk analysis, climate-resilient city design, understanding the NAPs (National Adaptation Plans) policy framework, strategic thinking, project management skills, and feasibility study techniques. Furthermore, future-ready skills such as critical thinking and a growth mindset were developed to empower these students to become leaders poised to create a significant positive impact on the world.

The program featured six activity bases designed to simplify complex environmental theories and stimulate critical thought. For instance, the “Climate Tech” base, led by GULF staff, provided in-depth knowledge on climate change, covering its causes, effects, physical climate risks, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies, and adaptation measures. This was complemented by engaging brain games that offered a relaxing break while integrating knowledge about environmentally friendly technologies. Students also learned through interactive sessions such as the “Forsaken Whale” board game, analysis of Maladaptation issues, and the “Connecting the Dot” base for linking environmental topics.

The program culminated in a rigorous hackathon for rapid innovation idea development, followed by the final pitching where eight teams presented their concepts. The judging criteria for the final presentations were academic accuracy, feasibility of application, outstanding development approach and presentation interest. The winning team from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School stood out with their CHAMP (Climate, Health Adaptation & Monitoring Platform) innovation—a data-driven map that uses weather data to predict and enable timely preparedness for dengue fever outbreaks. For the 1st Runner-Up, Nam Phong Suksa School, with an AI-based durian ripeness assessment application. The 2nd Runner-Up, Suankularb Wittayalai School, for a health-focused application addressing rising health risks (such as emerging diseases, heatwaves, and disasters) due to climate change. For Outstanding Advisor Awards were presented to two mentors: Dr. Pasaveepich Rungrojtrakul (Mahidol Wittayanusorn School) and Mr. Decha Khantajit (Assumption College Sriracha).

Ms. Theerathiphisa Tawichpasoot, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, GULF, stated, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School team for their well-deserved victory and commend all 20 teams for showcasing their exceptional potential and creativity in presenting Climate Change Adaptation innovations. GULF is proud to have been a part of igniting and nurturing this seed of innovation, enabling these young talents to develop holistically through in-depth knowledge transfer from sustainability experts and the mentorship of our Gulf volunteer staff. We have witnessed several ideas with real-world potential, clearly confirming that our youth are a critical driving force for the transition to a sustainable society. GULF remains committed to supporting the potential of the new generation and fostering sustainable innovation to create a meaningful impact on the world.”

Prof. Dr. Pisut Pianmanakul, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, and Acting Director of the Carbon Institute for Sustainability (CBiS), commented, “This year’s theme, Climate Change Adaptation, is highly relevant to the current global situation. The nearly 800 team applications demonstrate that the network of youth with this shared mission and goal is continually expanding. The five months of intensive activities provided invaluable experience and deep learning for the students. I sincerely hope that the Green Mission by Chula x GULF project can continue annually to create innovation and develop leaders for a sustainable world.”

The winning team members from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School—Mr. Kantapon Wanitchanukorn, Mr. Kittinan Atthasiri, and Mr. Wachirawit Chaphoomee— shared their thoughts, “Green Mission by Chula x GULF project has truly opened up our world and allowed us to express our full potential. We are grateful for the field trips to the Thaicom Teleport and DTH Center and the Uthai Power Plant, which provided us with knowledge and data to further our project. The bootcamp significantly broadened our scope through invaluable consultations with professors and mentors. This has been a precious experience in creating innovative ideas that will help the world and its people.”
While the main competition has concluded, the excitement continues! GULF invites the public to vote for the team with the most creative project presentation to win the ‘Popular Vote By GULF’ scholarship of 10,000 Baht. Voting is open on the Gulf Spark Facebook Page from today until November 10, 2025, at 12:00 PM. The winner will be announced on November 12, 2025.
