GULF Highlights Data Centers as Core Engine for Thailand’s Digital Economy and Energy Transition in the AI Era

Mr. Smith Banomyong, Chief Strategy Officer, Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), shared strategic insights at the “NEW ENERGY FOR THAILAND” seminar during the special talk session “Power for a New Era” organized by Matichon Group at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel.

Mr. Smith emphasized that data centers are not a resource burden, but rather the cornerstone of digital infrastructure that will retain digital revenues and capture high-value economic activity within Thailand. He outlined three critical dimensions driving the nation into the AI era.

Data centers function much like large-scale commercial office buildings or complexes, purpose-built to house and maintain extensive server infrastructure supporting modern corporate cloud environments.

  • Data center facilities focus primarily on thermal management and cooling to maintain continuous server performance. They operate under rigorous safety standards with zero harmful chemical emissions or radiation to surrounding communities.
  • Mission-critical continuity is paramount. Facilities are equipped with multi-tiered backup power architectures, ranging from Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems for instantaneous protection to heavy-duty backup generators for prolonged emergency power supply.

An Economic Value Engine: Curtailing the Digital Services Deficit

Concerns over electricity and water consumption reflect a narrow, cost-only perspective. From a macroeconomic standpoint, data centers act as a vital mechanism for strengthening national financial resilience:

  • Thai businesses and consumers rely heavily on overseas digital services—such as enterprise platforms (Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, Salesforce), global streaming services, and online advertising platforms. Developing domestic data centers helps retain significant economic value within Thailand’s financial ecosystem.
  • Much like automotive assembly plants or oil refineries, even when global players own the technology, hosting the physical infrastructure domestically spurs substantial domestic investment, high-skilled employment, and related supply chain ecosystems.
  • Storing and processing data locally enhances connectivity performance, mitigates external network dependency, and ensures operational continuity for essential services under any circumstance.

Thailand’s Late-Mover Advantage: Leaping Ahead with Next-Gen Technology

While Thailand began scaling data centers later than some regional peers, this timing offers a compelling strategic advantage, allowing the country to build directly with the most advanced and energy-efficient technologies available.

  • Thailand’s data center footprint has accelerated from under 100 megawatts (MW) just a few years ago to approximately 700 MW across completed and under-construction projects, significantly boosting the country's regional competitiveness.
  • Next-generation data centers being built in Thailand achieve Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratings below 1.2—a notable decrease from legacy averages of 1.8—substantially reducing auxiliary cooling power demands.
  • Entering the market today enables Thailand to deploy cutting-edge AI computing chips that deliver vastly higher compute capacity per unit of energy, comparable to modern engines delivering greater distance on less fuel.
