GULF’s Solar Initiative Strengthens Marine and Coastal Conservation at Koh Mattra, Chumphon

Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), a leading energy and infrastructure company, is reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future by delivering solar energy to Koh Mattra (Mattra Island), part of the Mu Ko Chumphon National Park in Chumphon Province. This initiative, under the project “Green Energy Green Network for THAIs,” aims to provide reliable, clean energy to support park officials in their critical mission of protecting Thailand’s marine and coastal resources, promoting conservation, and ensuring tourist safety.

Mr. Ukrist Deethongon, Head of Mu Ko Chumphon National Park, stated that the park covers over 200,000 rai (approximately 80,000 acres) and consists of more than 41 islands across five districts. Koh Mattra stands out as a key island rich in natural resources, including mangrove forests, pristine white-sand beaches, and vibrant shallow-water coral reefs. It is also a significant sanctuary, serving as the largest nursery for giant clams in Thailand. Furthermore, Koh Mattra is a base for park rangers who are stationed there on a rotating basis. Their duties include patrolling the area to prevent illegal fishing, conducting marine conservation and restoration activities such as underwater trash collection, and monitoring and collecting research samples from rare marine animals. The rangers are also responsible for collecting park entrance fees and ensuring the safety of tourists.

In the past, Koh Mattra has faced a significant power shortage due to the long-term degradation of its existing solar panels. This forced the use of high-cost generators, which in turn led to limited operating hours. This was a major obstacle for park officials, particularly for nighttime lighting, charging communication devices for operational use, and conducting smart patrols. The smart patrol system utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to enhance systematic prevention and suppression efforts, enabling standardized planning, data collection, and analysis. However, the unstable power supply from the generators hindered these operations and frequently caused damage to equipment and electrical appliances.

Mr. Pasutha Buathong, a forest ranger, added that Koh Mattra is currently staffed by two teams on six-day rotations, and the lack of electricity has made their work extremely difficult. The unstable power supply from the generators frequently damages tools and equipment. Furthermore, the electricity problem prevents tourists from staying overnight on the island, which impacts local tourism revenue.

GULF’s solar installation is poised to be a game-changer. “This has truly turned the situation around for Koh Mattra,” Mr. Buathong said. “Beyond making our work more efficient, it will directly benefit the community. Allowing overnight stays will create new revenue streams for local residents and fishing groups, genuinely fostering a sustainable economy alongside our conservation efforts.”

Mr. Ukrist further stated that Koh Mattra has immense potential, both for its natural beauty and as what may be the largest giant clam nursery in Thailand. Previously, the lack of a reliable and safe electricity supply from the generators forced them to suspend tourist overnight stays. Now, with the stable power provided by GULF's solar installation, the efficiency and safety of marine resource protection missions will be significantly improved, enabling more consistent and precise work for the officials.

“This genuinely unlocks Koh Mattra's tourism potential,” he added. “We believe that once the island’s infrastructure is ready, it will become a major destination for Chumphon Province again, generating income for the community and the country while sustainably conserving this pristine ecosystem. On behalf of the Mu Ko Chumphon National Park, I extend our sincere gratitude to GULF for installing this clean solar energy system and for transferring the knowledge on proper maintenance and efficient usage to our staff.”

This project on Koh Mattra marks the fourth site under the “Green Energy Green Network for THAIs” initiative in 2025, following installations at Ban Pong Pattana in Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai, Ban Sa Ne Phong in Sangkhla Buri District, Kanchanaburi, and Ban Doi Wiang in Chai Prakan District, Chiang Mai.
